About the Comic

Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is the project title of what will supposedly once be a series of comics about Heaven, Hell, and everything in between.

The universe of the comic takes root in Christian mythology, draws inspiration from many religions and myths and stays true to none of them.
The world is divided in two planes: That of the living, and that of Heaven and Hell who have been at war for as long as anyone can remember.

Most mortals like you and me live with no real knowledge of the afterlife, and it is Heaven’s most important duty to keep it that way, however hard it is with Hell itself constantly trying to break down the borders.
Heaven is inhabited by those dead who have earned a chance to live forever as an angel. Hell is full of demons and monsters that can only look at the benefits of having a soul with envy, and in turn most of them hold a natural hatred for all things to do with Heaven.
These conflicts are only fuelling the strife that seems like it will last for all eternity.

Any project must start somewhere, and this one starts with the story Rebound about Heaven and its angels. The angel general Balthazar is sent out to aid the planet Kimera in a feud between two races, but ends up getting involved in a much bigger scheme that will damage Heaven directly.
Rebound takes on the subjects of war and fanaticism, but also how easy it is to get lost in the idea of what’s good and what’s evil.

Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is made by two Danes named Maia and Gitte. The project has been shaped through many years of online roleplaying sessions between the two. Since there was no sense in letting a bunch of good stories waste away in the dusty hard drives of their computers they decided to make a comic.

FAQ

- When does the comic update?
Every Monday, Danish time.
- So you’re two authors? I’m confused, who does what?
Yes, we are two authors: Maia and Gitte.
Gitte does everything artsy about the comic except the flatcolouring which is usually done by Maia or some of our little colouring slaves :P The script and the characters for the comic are collaborative, but Maia usually comes up with most of the good ideas.
Gitte is also in charge of the website, writes the author’s notes for the comic and so on.
- Where does the comic’s name Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (B.I.B.L.E.) come from?
Originally Maia’s boyfriend Peter suggested the name, and we thought it was cool so we used it.
It’s pure coincidence that we share the name with a rap song and a bunch of stupid t-shirts.
- Didn’t you do some other comic? What happened to that one?
This question is probably only relevant if you’re Danish, but yes, we used to do a comic called Grey Town with a friend of ours named Henning Larsen. The comic part of this project never got very far, but a lot of the later ideas (and in some cases characters) were transferred to B.I.B.L.E.
- What’s up with the red halos? And green halos for that matter.
The angels have a ranking system that is displayed through their halos. It’s a bit more complicated than this, but basically the angels with red halos are warriors and the angels with green halos are healers. There are more types of angels than these two, though.
- Are those Nazi signs on Balthazar’s halo? Is he a Nazi or something?
The Nazi signs are also known as swastika. It’s a very old and powerful symbol that has been used by a lot of other cultures and religions than the Nazi Germans. The swastika has a lot of meanings – Among other things it is a sun symbol. All angel generals have halos with these symbols on them, that doesn’t mean they’re all Nazis.
- The cherubim… topless… bu – why?
They are primitive creatures who live in all-female family groups. Clothes don’t matter to them unless it’s there for practical reasons.
- Will [insert character’s name] come back? Pleeeaaase?
There are going to be a lot of minor characters in this comic. Chances are that if you can’t find the character you’re asking about on the cast list they’re not very important and probably won’t come back for more than a minor role. Also, begging won’t get you anywhere since the whole comic is already plotted out, and we’re not just changing it.
